Its knowledge even becomes crucial when it comes to an electric vehicle since its autonomy and its price in the event of resale are at stake.

However, car manufacturers have so far been reluctant to easily provide this information to their customers. It is necessary to deepen the subject, much more complex than it seems, to understand why and to know if we can really know the state of health of a lithium battery, and if so under what conditions.

Problems

The BMS, the dark side of the force (1)

Lithium technology batteries have a special chemistry that needs to be closely controlled. This is the role of an electronic element, the BMS (for "Battery Management System") which will recover physical measurements from sensors placed in the battery, and will first ensure its safety, by turning it off and therefore stop the load or the vehicle if necessary, so that out-of-specification currents or temperatures do not damage it. Badly managed, a lithium battery can catch fire...

As a battery is made up of several theoretically identical cells but in reality with different behavior, the BMS will also ensure the correct distribution of the currents between them, in order to balance them.

What interests us here is the other role of the BMS, which is to provide useful information to the driver of the vehicle, primarily of course the current level of charge (SOC for "State of Charge"), because it is better for him to know if he will soon run out of fuel or not... It is also the BMS which will provide the SOH, here we are.

The SOH is a calculation of the BMS (2)

Being the result of the comparison between the current capacity of the battery with its original capacity, the SOH is expressed in %. So a 75% SOH indicates that the battery has lost a quarter of its original capacity.

The problem of its determination seems simple: if we compare the battery to a tank which shrinks with wear, the SOH is its current volume, while the SOC is its gauge. To know its current volume, simply empty it completely, then fill it to the brim and measure how much you have put in. Bad luck, that's where it gets complicated.

Indeed, technically, the SOH, no more than the SOC, is not a direct physical measurement as one can measure the number of liters that one has put in a tank. It is an estimate made by a BMS algorithm, resulting from complex calculations made from direct measurements that it compares to theoretical models.

The precise calculation of the SOH requires calibrations (3)

On the other hand, for this estimate to be as accurate as possible, the BMS must be able to calibrate itself from time to time with measurements taken at the ends of the load range, ideally 0% (to empty the tank), and 100% of charge (to fill it to the brim), which is not so frequent concerning the 0%, since in general we avoid running out of energy during a journey.

A user concerned about keeping his battery alive as long as possible by following the usual advice to stay between 20 and 80% charged, will at the same time prevent the BMS from calibrating...

Builders are judges and parties (4)

A user who notices a sharp reduction in his autonomy will have to go to his dealer for a diagnosis. In the case of rental batteries, therefore potentially exchanged free of charge, we have unfortunately seen testimonies of aberrant diagnoses, without written report, with so-called 100% SOH on vehicles several years old. Let's kindly chalk it up to incompetence, but at the very least it underscores the user's brand dependency situation, until now.

Manufacturers manipulate the SOH (5)

Many car manufacturers limit the performance of their new batteries by software at the BMS level. Their goal is to give a good image of the durability of their equipment by artificially delaying the moment when it is time to change the battery.

For example, a manufacturer can decide, via the BMS, to limit the performance of its new battery to 90% of its real values. When the customer sees the SOH drop below the fateful 75% of the warranty, he goes to his dealer, thinking he has to change the battery. The dealer is then content to carry out a simple reprogramming of the BMS, paying most of the time, so that it uses all of what is available, which effectively increases the autonomy, and reinflates the SOH.

Of course this trick has its limits since in this example we can only do it once, but we understand that the SOH provided by the BMS is decidedly far from being an absolute truth and that the manufacturers do not want their customers access it too easily.

Solutions

Access the SOH yourself

Thus the SOH is, to date, never indicated on the dashboard of an electric vehicle (except on the Nissan Leaf, but with great inaccuracy), for the reasons given above. To access it, it is necessary to use an external electronic box which will be able to read a lot of information, including the SOH, via a diagnostic socket, the famous OBD socket (for "On Board Diagnosis") which is now fitted to all vehicles. Many solutions exist on the market, from the simple dongle that can be read with a smartphone application via Wi-Fi to the sophisticated device with touch screen. (6)

However accessing the SOH information does not make it more reliable, but given what we have seen of the technical operation of the BMS, we can at least try to improve its accuracy.

Make the SOH more accurate

To properly calculate the SOH, we now know that the BMS needs measurements made at the ends of the recharge range, in other words calibrations.

In practice, a calibration will consist of:

- Take a preliminary reading of the SOH via an external box.
- Drive enough so that the remaining charge approaches 0%, without of course running out of energy.
- Leave the vehicle at rest "for a while" so that the battery cools down, the ideal being an internal temperature of 20°C. An external box is usually able to provide it.
- Start charging up to 100%. You shouldn't settle for 98 or 99%, and if the load freezes before 100%, the BMS is a bit lost in its calculations. In this case, you have to unplug and reconnect until you reach them. For those who have a choice between slow or fast charging, slow charging should be used so that the BMS can recalibrate finely.
- Take a new reading of the SOH and note the difference with the first reading. The second should be closer to reality.

The opacity that surrounds the BMS algorithms makes it impossible to know if a single calibration is sufficient to obtain an immediately more precise SOH. It is more than likely that the BMS performs smoothing to eliminate occasional errors. On the other hand, we know very well that putting the battery in a state of discharge that is too low (less than 10%) harms its longevity. It is therefore necessary to avoid repeating the calibrations too often.

Evolution of practices and legislation

Regarding the sometimes questionable actions of brands and their dealers, things are moving a little. For example, Renault, via its Mobilize subsidiary, is beginning to offer on-line diagnostics (7), which can circumvent the incompetence of certain dealers, and we have also seen the emergence in Europe of independent companies, such as Moba in France, for achieve more objectively (8).

On the other hand, European legislation, through the implementation of the future "digital battery passport", should force manufacturers to provide the actual capacity of their batteries and their state of health, among other things (9 and 10).

Conclusions

An external box therefore makes it possible to know the value of the SOH, bearing in mind that it is only an estimate of the BMS which must be calibrated beforehand to work better, and that it can be biased by the will of the manufacturer.

We can hope for positive developments, which are essential for consumer information and confidence, through the development of healthier practices on the part of manufacturers, through competition from independent companies and through the legal obligation to provide information via the future "digital battery passport".

Sources

(1) Electropaedia - "Battery Management Systems (BMS)" : https://www.mpoweruk.com/bms.htm

(2) Example of algorithm development for the calculation of the SOH: Thesis of Aurélien Lièvre (in French) - "Développement d'un système de gestion de batterie lithium-ion à destination de véhicules "mild hybrid" : détermination des indicateurs d'état (SoC, SoH et SoF)" : https://theses.hal.science/tel-01178049

(3) MDPI - "State-of-Charge Estimation with State-of-Health Calibration for Lithium-Ion Batteries" : https://www.mdpi.com/1996-1073/10/7/987

(4) Evidence of dubious diagnoses (in French)
Véhicules électriques : http://www.vehiculeselectriques.fr/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=17191
Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/groups/twizyfans/posts/1724882684341726/

(5) Challenges - "How automakers are dodging electric car warranties" (in French) : https://www.challenges.fr/automobile/dossiers/comment-les-constructeurs-esquivent-la-garantie-des-voitures-electriques_785612

(6) Example of Twiz O'Meter : https://lifeintwizy.blogspot.com/2023/01/twiz-ometer-screen-that-says-lot-about.html

(7) L'Argus - "Electric car. I think it's a prudent and intelligent choice that allows not to provoke a reaction of rejection by adopting the aesthetic consensus of the moment, with a touch of aggressiveness.

Main Features

The Silence S04 is a 100% electric two-seater tubular frame quadricycle that offers two versions: a L6e version accessible without a license and therefore limited to 45 km / h, that competes with the Twizy 45, the Citroën Ami or the Eixam ECity pack, and a L7e version with license that can go up to 90 km / h and competes with the Twizy 80, and perhaps the Microlino 2.0 if it finally comes out. The cockpit is completely closed with 2 doors and traditional windows.

Price

Many automotive magazines have taken the announced base price of € 7,500 but they have often forgotten that this price is excluding traction battery (s), a very expensive component of an electric vehicle ... 'is not yet officially known, but Silence Paris kindly informed me of a price of € 3,000 for a battery.

The base price of the L6e version of the S04, with a battery, would therefore be € 10,500 and the L7e version with 2 batteries, would be at least € 13,500, rather € 14,000 to take into account the difference in motorization, prices excluding the ecological bonus.

In the "license-free" category, with its 10,500 € compared to the 7,000 € of the Citroën Ami, the Silence S04 will have to present many other advantages to convince. On the other hand, do not forget that an Eixam ECity pack still costs € 13,400.

In the "with license" category, the Silence S04 at € 14,000 would be more expensive than a Twizy 80 at € 13,000 equipped for a minimum of comfort (with options for doors, windows and heating blanket). Again, to really stand out, it will have to have other qualities ...

Unless the L7e version can run with a single battery, even if it means dividing its autonomy by 2, which would then reduce its base price to € 11,000 ...

On the other hand, the possibility of renting the batteries could also greatly reduce the cost of the purchase by bringing it down to € 7,500, plus the battery rental that could be around € 20 per month, therefore € 40. / month for 2 batteries.

Motorization, performance, batteries, range, recharging

Note: the exploded view presented above is not that of a Silence wheel-motor but that proposed by Protean Electric.

One of the great originalities of the Silence S04 is its motorization by 2 wheel-motors at the rear, i.e. an electric motor is integrated into the wheel, thus taking up what Silence already knows how to do with its electric scooters. This technology eliminates the many drawbacks of traditional gear, chain or belt transmissions: power dissipation, wear, size, weight, noise, cost, maintenance. If this system is not more widespread, it is because of the additional weight of the wheel that the suspension has difficulty in maintaining on the ground. It is therefore better suited to vehicles with low dynamics.

The L6e version of the Silence S04 receives a 6 kW motor and a 5.6 kWh battery. The speed is necessarily limited to 45 km / h and the autonomy of this model is not specified but we can extrapolate by giving it the same as that of the Citroën Ami which has similar characteristics, i.e. 75 km in eco mode according to the WMTC standard.

The L7e version has a 14 kW motor and two 5.6 kWh batteries so a total of 11.2 kWh, can go up to 90 km / h and offers a range of 149 km WMTC in eco mode (120 km in normal mode), to compare for example with 84 km / h maximum and 100 km of autonomy of the Renault Twizy 80. We go a little faster and especially much further with an S04 than with a Twizy 80.

We must stop at the system of removable and therefore interchangeable batteries that Silence has integrated into the S04, after having implemented it on its electric scooters, and which is another important innovation for this category of vehicles. Indeed, one can easily remove the battery of the S04 which weighs "only" 40 Kg, thanks to a system of handle and wheels and which one handles like a suitcase-trolley. In this way, many of the pitfalls associated with electromobility are eliminated knowing that not everyone has the possibility of plugging in their electric vehicle at the bottom of their home or office.

With the S04 you can easily take the battery home or to the workplace to recharge it. This system also makes it possible to exchange the battery very quickly with another battery already recharged in one of the exchange centers that the manufacturer intends to install little by little.

When the battery is too worn out, it will be just as easy to exchange it for a new one without any need for downtime, for an authorized technician, and therefore without any labor costs.

And I would add that in some very specific cases, we can technically imagine taking a 3rd battery in the trunk to achieve a range of around 200 km.

Of course we can fear the unreliability associated with a new technology, for the battery as for the wheel-motors, but all this is not really new for Silence since these are the same elements that already equip its S01 scooters. So the whole must be well mastered especially since it is Silence which manufactures its own batteries.

Recharging is done either by the vehicle or directly to the battery, by plugging into a simple household outlet like its competitors.

A complete recharge of a battery takes 6 hours ... Compared to the 3 hours and 3.5 hours of the Citroën Ami and Renault Twizy, it is not famous, but is it really a problem if you are recharging at home during the night or when you are at work? The real problem will only arise if you have to recharge along the way: 1 hour to recover 10 km of autonomy, that's a long time ...

Safety

The Silence S04 is equipped with seat belts like its competitors, although the driver of the Twizy is held by 2 belts.

Although its steering wheel is quite thick, the S04 does not appear to have a driver's airbag that Renault Twizy has.

Like the Twizy, the S04 is equipped with 4 disc brakes, guaranteeing effective braking even if it is not assisted. The Ami has discs in the front and only drums in the rear.

The Silence S04 is a rear-wheel drive vehicle, like the Renault Twizy, which theoretically gives it better bite but poorer behavior on slippery roads than a Citroën Ami whose drive wheels are at the front.

It can receive optional ABS, which none of its competitors offers.

It is fitted with 155 tires like the Citroën Ami, wider than those of the Twizy (125 and 135)

The lighting is entirely LED.

Dimensions - Comfort - Habitability - Equipment

With 233 cm long and 156 cm wide, compared to 234 x 123 for the Twizy, 241 x 136 for the Citroën Ami, and 243 x 150 for the Microlino, the Silence S04 is the widest but the shortest, which is in my opinion a good compromise since anyway we do not squeeze like a 2-wheeler with this type of vehicle, but every centimeter in length counts when you have to park in very small spaces.

The passengers of an S04 probably won't be much better transported than with a Twizy or an Ami. Don't dream, such small vehicles offer little overhead travel for the suspension, and the S04's seats don't feel softer than those of the competition. However, there is a bucket shape which ensures good support for the bust when cornering.

In order to improve the use of space, the two seats are not arranged exactly next to each other but are staggered, with the passenger seat further to the rear.

The Silence S04 has a practical rear trunk access and rather generous for its category, containing 310 liters, far beyond what the Microlino (220 liters), Renault Twizy (31 liters) or Citroën Ami (0 ).

The dashboard with a large storage area is less rudimentary than that of its competitors and especially the interior finishes of the cabin put it, again, far above them, practically at the level of a tourism car.

The same applies to the basic equipment which includes five-speed wiper, heater-defroster, multifunction steering wheel, electric windows, electric handbrake, central locking, Bluetooth stereo system, 7-inch TFT digital screen, smartphone holder and numerous connectivity functions allowing the vehicle to be managed remotely via an application.

As an option, air conditioning and ABS can be added.

Availability - Distribution

The Silence S04 will be available in Spain in the first quarter of 2022 and, according to Silence Paris, the release in France will be in the second half of 2022.

As Silence and Seat are already partners in the field of electric scooters, we can imagine that the Silence S04 will eventually also be available from Seat, especially since negotiations have taken place in this direction and that Seat has abandoned its own project of electric quadricycle that was the Minimo.

Conclusion

Unfortunately expensive in full purchase, the Silence S04 seems to me to be a serious offer of an innovative electric quadricycle, well thought out, very complete, superior to the competition in terms of performance and equipment, and its system of removable rechargeable at home batteries can reach a public hitherto excluded from electric mobility. Normal it is Renault Sport who designed it.

And then we often want to improve it, transform it, use it differently. So if I myself have done a lot of things in my time, windows, luggage racks, roof racks with trunk, and even shameful things, I feel very small when I see what I'm going to show you now. It must be said that it was Renault itself which launched hostilities in 2012 with the Twizy F1 and Sebastian Vettel at the wheel, which aroused a lot of envy among fans.

Types of trips

Road use

Renault offers the Twizy 80 model which remains unrivaled for extra-urban use. If you have the B license and want to travel on country roads, traveling at 45 km / h with an Ami or a Twizy 45 will not be really fun, and can even be dangerous, while the Twizy 80 can drive up to 84 km / h.

On the road: Advantage to the Twizy 80 for lack of fighter!

Urban and peri-urban use

The Ami is positioned in town as a real competitor of the model 45 of the Twizy, the 2 vehicles being limited to 45 km / h and being able to be driven "without a license", from 14 years old.

In town: Equality

Autonomy and recharge

With a 5.5 kWh battery the Ami provides 75 km of autonomy according to the WMTC standard which can be reduced to 55-60 km in real conditions.

The Twizy 45 is equipped with a 6.1 kWh battery offering 120 km according to the manufacturer, but 80-90 km real.

In both cases, recharging is done on a simple domestic socket, without the possibility of rapid recharging. If the recharging times are almost equivalent, respectively 3h and 3h30 for a full charge, the Twizy is again a little more efficient, since 1 hour of recharging will very roughly give the Twizy 25 km of autonomy, against 20 km for the Ami.

Autonomy and recharging: Advantage to the Twizy 45

Safety

The Twizy 45 is equipped with an airbag and a second seat belt for the driver, which the Ami does not have. The Euro NCAP crash test put the Twizy at the head of the quadricycles despite only 2 small stars. The Ami has not yet undergone an official crash test but we can assume that the absence of an airbag will be unfavorable to him. It also seems to me that the passenger of a Twizy, seated in the back and restrained by the front seat in the event of an impact, is better protected than that of a Friend.

The Twizy's handling is better thanks to a lower center of gravity. Its braking, although harder, is also a little more efficient thanks to its 4 disc brakes.

The Twizy is rear-wheel drive vehicle with rear-wheel drive, while the Ami is front-wheel drive. The first can sometimes create surprises on a slippery road, but Renault has worked well on this point by giving its vehicle a slightly understeer character, with a tendency to go straight, easier to catch up in the event of loss of grip.

Safety: Clear advantage to the Twizy 45

Comfort and practicalities

The presence of really hermetic windows and a heater in the base model of the Ami gives it a clear advantage over the Twizy even equipped with its optional windows and a heated blanket. The Twizy is a real strainer, and the rear passenger is even worse off than the driver.

The comfort of the seats seems equivalent, that is to say spartan, but the Ami's suspension seems to filter out the imperfections of the road better.

The passenger of the Ami can be seated much more easily than that of the Twizy and its position next to the driver is much more pleasant than the position in tandem of the Twizy.

Storage boxes are very small in the Twizy and almost nonexistent in the Ami, but the latter has a bunch of nifty little storage spots and seems to me more practical overall than the Twizy.

The dashboard is rudimentary in both cases but the Ami is better designed to receive your smartphone to obtain additional information on the vehicle, navigation aid, listen to music, etc.

The Twizy does not have lockable doors.

Be careful, the panoramic glass roof is often presented as a plus but it can become a drawback when the weather is very nice by making the vehicle a real oven with wheels.

Comfort and practical aspects: a clear advantage to the Citroën Ami

Dimensions / handling

The fact that the occupants are side by side in the Ami is a comfort advantage that pays off in terms of size. The Ami is therefore wider by a dozen cm but also longer by a little ten. Its turning radius is also larger by 40 cm, which is not negligible. All this makes the Ami a little less manoeuvrable and less easy to park in the very small parking spaces that these vehicles like. However, neither one nor the other will be able to squeeze through traffic as a 2-wheeler would.

The Twizy's elytral doors make it possible to exit the vehicle with very little space around, better than with the classic opening doors of the Ami.

Dimensions and maneuverability: Advantage to the Twizy

Motorization

The Ami's engine is more powerful by 3 HP (7 Nm) than that of the Twizy 45 and therefore gives it more power when starting.

Motorization: Advantage to the Ami

Price

To compare the 2 vehicles, it is necessary to present comparable models, that is to say with doors, side windows, a panoramic roof, defrosting of the windshield, a heater, since all this is present in the base model of the Citroën Ami which costs 6,900 €.

To obtain the equivalent with a Twizy 45, you will have to pay € 10,000 for a basic Twizy 45 plus doors (€ 590), windows (€ 400), a transparent roof (€ 250), defrosting (€ 100) ) and an electric blanket (188 €). Total: 11,528 €

(Price excluding ecological bonus, currently 900 €)

Note: the capacity of the Ami's battery is 10% less, which means that with equal use it will have 10% less life.

Price: Very clear advantage to the Citroën Ami

Aesthetic

Before concluding, I will quickly mention the aesthetic aspect which is of course a very personal question. I find L'Ami quite ugly and I don't have a crush like on the Twizy. However, I also find it rather nice and in the end, it corresponds quite well to this old Citroën tradition of producing ugly but very simple and nice cars, I am thinking of the 2CV, the Dyane, the Méhari or even the Ami 6! Something to delight Twizy fans who have been waiting for a version 2 for a long time! But the few rare elements we have can moderate this enthusiasm ...

Here is my interpretation of the presentation made in English, smartphone in hand, by Patrick Lecharpy, design manager at Mobilize, the brand new Renault brand dedicated to new mobilities.

To better follow I advise you to watch the video below since it is about the decryption of a video ...

First the look. From my point of view it is rather pretty, angular and dynamic, with large wheels because it is the trend, while keeping the general line of the Twizy, far from the "soapbox" aspect of the Citroën Ami that the EZ-1 must compete with. But beware, experience shows that there can be a huge gap between the concept car and the production model, the Twizy and the AMI are very good examples. The presence of doors and side windows is a very significant improvement.

But what we first learn from Patrick Lecharpy is that the EZ-1 is designed for car-sharing ... It follows that you will not be able to buy it, since Renault's goal is to switch us from the possession of the vehicle to its sole use, therefore its rental, by the hour, by the day etc. A very interesting idea for large metropolises but which excludes somewhat distant suburbs, small and medium-sized towns and of course the countryside, where the Twizy is nevertheless not absent ... The other consequence of car-sharing strictly urban, as other sources assert, is that the EZ-1 will be "license-free" therefore limited to 45 km / h. Therefore it will not be the replacement for the Twizy 80 which is limited to 84 km / h and requires a license.

The presenter tells us very quickly that the EZ-1 is connected and that it is an electric vehicle. Okay ... No indication of the benefits or the need for this connectivity but the word is placed ...

Then come considerations on the little printfoot that the EZ-1 have since, like the Twizy, you can park 3 in a single parking place. Other sources of information indicate that the EZ-1 would be 2.30 meters long, roughly like the current Twizy. According to Patrick Lecharpy, it would be the least bulky of the quadricycles, but we don't know more.

Patrick Lecharpy claims that since the EZ-1 is for car-sharing, it is sturdy, which is indeed necessary as these shared vehicles often get abused. He says it has 2 doors that open vertically, in other words scissor doors like the Twizy, so that you can get in and out of the car easily and safely. What is funny in this passage is that Patrick Lecharpy does not show any of this, he only talks about it, which logically leads me to think that what he designates as a "prototype" is just a model without any functionality, a block of plastic placed on wheels ... The term prototype seems rather abusive ... On the other hand, when you know the Twizy well, which is my case, you knows that access to the rear seat is not really easy, however, looking closely at the video of the EZ-1 we see that the steering wheel is slightly shifted to the left and therefore the driver's seat too. Would it be to make life easier for the passenger? We can hope so.

We are told that the EZ-1 is bright and open to the city, we can believe it, the glass surfaces are generous. On the other hand, when we are told that it is comfortable, we would like to have some details ... Still looking very closely at another extract from this presentation, I think I can guess that the driver's seat is quite simply that of a Twizy and I can guarantee you that this is not a model of the comfortable kind!

Now here is a very interesting element concerning the batteries. Well, no technical information on their capacity, so we cannot deduce anything from the autonomy on a full charge which would be according to other sources limited around 75 km like the Citroën Ami. No, the interesting thing about this is the fact that these batteries are exchangeable, ie instead of having to wait to recharge to start again, we “simply” exchange the battery with another previously charged. In theory, this is a big plus for car-sharing companies with a significant gain in productivity. In practice, this assumes a heavy infrastructure. This concept of swappable batteries (or quickdrop) is not new, which is not to say that it is not a good idea. But it has already had its "flop" in 2013 with the bankruptcy of Better Place, a specialized company in which Renault had however invested before withdrawing, judging that there was "no economic model". It must be said that it is already difficult to install sufficient charging stations, then battery exchange stations ... Wait and see ...

Patrick Lecharpy is now talking about an ecological plus : EZ-1 will be made of 50% recycled material. In addition, it will be "refreshed" twice which will lead to a final recycling of 95% of the vehicle. Nice score that we can only approve but will the batteries be part of this calculation? That too remains to be seen.

Last information and perhaps not the best: the EZ-1 will not be available until 2023 ... By then a lot can happen and we have seen a number of concept cars remain in the pipeline. Right now the EZ-1 is just an idea.

Conclusion: as a fan of Twizy, I was rather disappointed by this presentation which in the end is only based on a pretty model whose only available features seem to be just a few lights and a screen on the front that displays "Mobilize"... The rest is just words and good intentions, that's okay, but that leaves room for many questions.

Sources :

https://www.automobile-magazine.fr/voitures-electriques/article/28706-la-future-renault-mobilize-ez-1-peut-elle-concurrencer-la-citroen-ami

https://www.lefigaro.fr/societes/2013/05/27/20005-20130527ARTFIG00613-better-place-partenaire-de-renault-en-faillite.php?fbclid=IwAR3kcsA4M2YRQjoT_iGGfJqrnCp52aaoElyUvH1CRXuI1i_3-ryf1n6Vuu0

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4836712964958984811.post-75395896131148846562020-12-06T10:36:00.006-08:002023-01-29T09:47:40.912-08:00Twizy, AMI and other EV : save your lithium battery

The question arises of what to do to preserve the battery in order to prolong its life as long as possible. This is what I suggest you discover with these article and video :

Video

General principles :

Lithium batteries do not like extreme states of charge especially prolonged, do not like heat, and age with the number of charge cycles. From these main principles, we will learn lessons at different levels which will first of all be good charging practices, to be implemented naturally when you charge your car on a socket, but also when driving. And good discharge practices that should be followed when you are obviously on the road, but also when the car is stationary.

Charging advices

The ideal is to stay between 20 and 80% of the battery capacity. It is by staying in this zone that it will age best. It is therefore necessary to avoid charging above 80%. But we can qualify because if for example you recharge to 100% at night for use the next morning, the extreme state of charge will not last long and will damage your battery very little.
On the other hand, the battery management system (BMS) which calculates the current charge (SOC) and total available charge (SOH) values needs to be recalibrated from time to time. For that, it is necessary to proceed to a discharge close to 0% followed by a charge to 100% (read also: State of health of lithium batteries (SOH): many problems and some solutions)

Avoid high outside temperatures: As the charge is carried out by an external electricity supply, this necessarily causes the battery to heat up, which is harmful but inevitable. It is therefore not necessary to add even more heat by recharging for example in direct sunlight. A garage or a shady place is preferable.

Note that the cold does not damage lithium batteries but reduces their performance in capacity and available power.

On the road, use the engine brake: electric vehicles have the ability to use the electric motor as a dynamo and thus be able to recharge the battery when you decelerate, this is called regeneration. So every time you take your foot off the accelerator, you recharge the battery a little. There is obviously a direct interest in doing this since it provides more autonomy, but there is also a longer term interest since it increases the battery life by maintaining the level of charge, because batteries prefer stay in a fairly constant state.

Discharge Tips:

Avoid discharging the battery below 20% and above all leaving it discharged in this state. More imperatively, do not drop below 5% repeatedly because this will have a strong impact on its aging. But for example if your daily commute involves a discharge of up to 10% but you recharge immediately, no problem since this state of extreme discharge will not last long.

Avoid using the electric vehicle immediately after a charge: again the problem of heat: the charge already heats up the battery and its immediate use too, so nesting the two is not ideal.

Avoid strong acceleration: the purpose of the battery is to supply the electric motor and therefore to supply it with current, but the more the engine's power is used during strong acceleration, the more current it will need and therefore therefore the more the battery will start to heat up.

If you have to leave your electric vehicle unused for a long time, your best bet is to keep the charge around 50%. During a prolonged shutdown, over several days, the battery will discharge slowly and therefore drop below 20% and this is not good for it. It is therefore necessary to recharge it regularly and ideally maintain it in a stable state of charge, between the famous 20 and 80%, the best being the middle, that is to say 50%.

Under these conditions of non-use, it would also be better to leave the vehicle in a "cool" place, away from the strong heat which degrades the battery.

Despite all that...

Despite all these precautions, a lithium-ion battery inevitably ages simply because it is used! Indeed, it is estimated that batteries of this type have a lifespan of between 1000 and 1500 complete recharge cycles. So, having reached this value, these batteries are not completely dead, but they will have a capacity which will have fallen below 70 or 80% which causes too much reduction in the autonomy of the vehicle and which makes it unsuitable for its initial use.

If we take the example of the Renault Twizy, with pessimistic values (60 km of range on a single charge, and 1000 recharging cycles of life) but with use of the battery taking into account the advice I have just given to give, we roughly end up with a mileage of 60,000 km (60x 1000) before having a battery below 70%. With optimistic values (70 km of autonomy and 1,500 cycles) we obtain 105,000 km. The truth must be somewhere in the middle, which is rather reassuring for standard urban or peri-urban use of this small electric vehicle.

Conclusion:

To put it simply and to summarize, in order to extend the life of a lithium-ion battery, you must avoid extremes, in charge and discharge, in especially high temperatures, and adopt a cool and economical driving style. Finally, it is a very good philosophy of life!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4836712964958984811.post-21824145753281983422020-10-16T05:33:00.001-07:002020-10-16T05:33:26.432-07:00Cheap 12V batteries adapted to the Renault Twizy

For a few weeks now we have finally found 12V Twizy compatible batteries without any DIY to mount them and this for a reasonable price around 70-80 € including postage, half of what Renault offers ...

They are found under the references Exide EK143 or Fulmen FK143.

For my part I had to urgently order a 12V battery and I was very satisfied with the Tayna Batteries site, battery received in 5 days for € 77.33 including delivery

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/313074615249

Other Twizy users (whom I thank) have reported good experiences with INNPO for € 73.33 with the port and received in 4 days.
https://innpo.fr/auxiliaire/batterie-exide-auxiliaire-ek143-exide-auxiliaire.html?fbclid=IwAR2FbI2Ujyv9rNlx6Q8a_uWxhonGFrU0quhMDo7iDbt8NjpZBp_sKJSyt0k

Finally see how to replace this battery in this article:
https://lifeintwizy.blogspot.com/2019/04/renault-twizy-change-12v-battery.html
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4836712964958984811.post-32207632554938887802020-10-16T05:28:00.000-07:002020-10-16T05:28:15.615-07:00Twizy in the music video "Mercy Street" (Peter Gabriel)

This clip is above all a tribute to the song "Mercy Street" by Peter Gabriel as well as to Anne Sexton, American poet (1928-1974) who is the object, but as I put Twizy clones in it, it has its place here.

It's in HD, it deserves to be watched big and the music of course very loud!

You will still save up to a few tens of euros if you take a look at the following ...

Like many Twizy users, I had operational problems with the defrost control of the right switch of my Twizy, the price of which at Renault being around € 250 minimum ... Enough to hesitate!

With a little luck and a lot of research, I found a replacement switch that does the job beautifully (apart from one detail) and that only cost me € 51. Knowing that this is a repair that can happen several times in the life of a Twizy, it is worth taking a look!

Here is the video that explains all of that:

Here is for example the link to access the right column switch of Dacia Sandero 1 at Auto-Doc, but you can do your own research with the OEM code 6001551357

https://www.auto-doc.fr/pieces-detachees/oem/6001551357

If despite everything you absolutely want to have a Renault Twizy switch like the original, here are the availabilities at Buycarparts.com with the OEM code 252603241R but other sites also offer it:

https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/oen/252603241r

My front seat's upholstery is cracked on the sides so I searched and found a nice seat cover.

To fix it seriously I dismantled the upholstery so I thought that a tutorial on this dismantling would be useful. Here it is !
Here is the video showing how I did it:
I dared to tackle the change of a steering column switch, the defrosting one that shows some weakness in many cases on our Twizys.

I took the opportunity to make a video tutorial of course!
Safety warning: doing this repair requires removing the airbag from the steering wheel, which presents a double risk if the necessary precautions are not taken: risk of accidental release and very dangerous if the system is left active during handling; risk of non-operation if necessary if the cable is damaged.

Foldable roof boxes

A nice Twizy owner pointed out to me the existence of canvas roof boxes, foldable and much lighter (4 kg), which seems to me to be an interesting alternative to place more weight for the content than for the container!

Warning

If you plan to use a roof box on your Twizy keep in mind a few things: firstly in France Renault does not allow portage neither on the roof nor in rack. Then the presence of the roof box will be an obstacle to the flow of air and therefore you will lose aerodynamics and inevitably autonomy. The roof box represents an extra height. Think about it when you park in your garage or in an underground car park, it can touch! The center of gravity will also be a little higher, so the Twizy may be less stable in turns. Similarly the roof box will make the Twizy more sensitive to side wind. It will be necessary to adapt your speed and your behavior according to the presence of the roof box.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4993400451424174" data-ad-format="autorelaxed" data-ad-slot="5784774372" style="display: block;"></ins>

Renault 150€ VS Others 40€
To equip its Twizy 12V battery, Renault chose a specific battery not because of its electrical characteristics or its dimensions but because of the pods that are wider than the batteries of the same category that are easily found on simple scooters. They are also pierced with a hole of 5mm in diameter. It is true that it gives a solid fixation cables but the obligation to buy at Renault a very expensive battery they sell around 150 € while we find the same for 40 or 50 € (for me 45 € delivery included, discounted). Save 100 € on a fairly simple operation, well worth it?

Caracteristics
If you want to change the battery yourself, here's what you need to know:
Battery 12V 14Ah
Size in mm Length: 150 Width: 98 Height: 95

To drill pods...
So to use the less expensive standard batteries you have to drill the pods but it is not so simple because they are quite narrow and it weakens a little ...

... or not !
I found a trick (I'm here for that!) That allows not to drill the pods: if we can not pass the screw in the pod, it is only necessary to pass it on the side!

Here is the video that explains how to change the 12V battery without drilling (english subtitles to be activated with Youtube bottom icon)

And for a few cents more ...
Some pointed out to me rightly that there was a risk of disconnection. To minimize it, I made a flange with a paper clip for each of the pods. As it may rust, I advise you to put a bit of grease above all that.

As Renault has forgotten that its Twizy was subject to moisture more than a conventional vehicle, the manufacturer has used existing elements but unsuitable, especially with regard to electrical controls. It's the case with the warning switch and mine has recently failed.

Initially it is a switch used on Clio 2 and whose EOM code is 8200442723. With this reference you will find much cheaper than the Renault one.

Frequently it did not work out, but sometimes interesting elements emerged that go beyond the framework of the Twizy and this is what I want to share with you in this new series of videos called "The Secrets of Twizyman" (videos without words or with sub-titles). Far from wanting to give examples, it is rather a question of continuing to boil the ideas or to give them.

To inaugurate this series, I was interested in the problem of repairing scratches on polycarbonate.
The two videos below present two very different techniques supposed to attenuate the scratches on the polycarbonate, plastic used in the manufacture of the front deflectors of the Twizy but in many other fields.

They have in common to show the advantages of the scratch resistant polycarbonate but also its limits as well as those of the envisaged techniques.
Note that if you cannot make them by yourself, these deflectors are sold by the Twizy Fans France Association

The cost of this manufacturing is around 10 € assuming of course that you have standard DIY tools (detailed in the video)

Video of the manufacture of the new deflectors video (with english subtitles)

Template

Because the size of a deflector exceeds the size of an A4 sheet, I had to cut the template into 2 images that you can download from Flickr below.
Up template
Down template

It is of course essential to print these images on the right scale so that the template is the right size. The best way I've found is to open each file under Paint and go to the print preview layout and change the settings as below:

- Portrait
- Left and right margins at 0mm
- Scaling: adjust to 100% of normal size

The printing itself does not need a very high quality.
To make sure that your print is at the right scale, make sure the printed segment on the bottom right is 10 cm.

Good luck !
